The World as Will and Idea [Representation] (German Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung) is the central work of the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, published here, as in the original English translation, in 3 volumes. The main body of the work states at the beginning that it assumes prior knowledge of Immanuel Kant's theories (see his "Critique of Pure Reason" ISBN 9781537260051). Schopenhauer recommended that the student begin with the final Appendix (found in volume 3), titled "On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason" before the rest of the book. The first volume contains four Books, two on "The World as Will" and two on "The World as Idea," while the second and third volumes contain Supplementary material to each of the four books. The second volume also opens with an appendix to the four books, titled "Critique of the Kantian Philosophy," in which Schopenhauer rejects most of Kant's ethics and significant parts of his epistemology and aesthetics.

I bought this edition because it was cheaper than others and is in 2 volumes instead of 3 or 4. I like that there are fewer books in the set than in other editions because I prefer larger books over more books. However, as soon as I got it in the mail, I looked through and saw underlining in a new book! It's part of the edition! They are printing and selling new copies of scans of a used copy of the book! If I'm buying a new book, why do I want some random bloke's underlining? It appears that there are also empty spaces in the text, like something was highlighted and then whited-out in their claimed "digital remastering." They photocopied a print of the book from a library in Toronto. Why couldn't they actually produce a clean and fresh text? Why mass produce copies of a used text? The font size is uneven, and it looks like they tried erasing some of the markings. This is a pathetic edition. I look forward to reading it because it's a great classic of the genre, but I wish I instead spent 60 dollars or whatever on a better edition.Product details

The World As Will And Idea Vol 3 of 3 Arthur Schopenhauer 9781539690429 Books Reviews
By far the best philosophy book I've ever read and I feel that Schopenhauer is a good start to any would be serious and devout lover of philosophy . . . Where have you been all my life

Liked the book
I would it to interested in how the mind constructs ideas and activates them in the material world through the five or six senses.
This "translation" of The World as Will and Idea printed by General Books LLC is terrible.
No translator is listed. It is incomplete, missing important parts, and was total waste of money.
The disclaimer at the beginning of the book says in part
"...While the publisher and author have used their best efforts...they make no representation or warranties with respect to the accuracy or completeness of the contents of this book..." Further down it says
"We have created this book from the original using Optical Character Recognition software to keep the cost of the book as low as possible. ...please forgive any spelling mistakes, missing or extraneous characters..."
That pretty well sums it up. General Books LLC books clearly aren't even worth the money put into making them.
If you want a usable copy look for more well-known publisher. This is unusable for anyone studying the text academically, and fairly worthless for anyone else.
Unfortunately this title is misleading and starts in the middle of the book. It is a fair price for what you get but this kind of heady reading is not something one wants to start in the middle. I was unable to find a "part I" to this series so instead purchased an abridgement of the entire work so I intend to read the abridged version until it catches up with this, more detailed part of the work.
It comes from a source that allows you to download books very inexpensively but I didn't look into that as it is not for me. It may be a way to find the volume I of this series.

A must read for every one of us pretentious philosophers willing to read the worldviews of a grumpy but insightful Schopenhauer.
Do not spend money on this hard cover. The only thing of quality on this book is the cover. The contents are basically scanned bitmaps which have then been enlarged. 'Large Print' looks like a 10th generation copy.
Tough reading...some of it worthwhile, but I gave up after a few pages. Useful information if you are willing to dig.
