I got this book out of my Jr. High library when I was about 12 years old. The reason I was interested in it was because Bertha's niece, Sarah Van Hoosien Jones, was a patient of my mother's. Sarah recommended the book when she heard I liked books about medicine. I live in the area that is where this story takes place. So, fast forward to now and I decided I wanted an older copy to share with my mother who is now 92 years old!Product details

Dr Bertha VanHoosen is a distant relative and was still living in the 1940s. I don't recall ever meeting her but she must have been something. For a woman to go to medical school in the time period when she went was quite unorthodox but she did it. And she succeeded despite the odds. I would recommend this book, not because she is an ancestor of mine, but because it shows what women had to do to become independent.
We tend to forget how recently women doctors won the respect of the public. This autobiography makes very clear the trials and tribulations the early petticoat surgeons had to endure.
When she was 81 years old, Dr. VanHoosen performed emergency abdominal surgery on my future mother-in-law. Our family and many other families were helped by her diligent struggle to be educated and respected.
Superbly written auto biography of an early woman doctor. Has a wealth of information on 19th century hospitals, child birth practices, family planning, and the operation of medical practices. A bit like PBS's Mercy Street meets BBC's The Midwives.
